The summer heat is overwhelming. You reached for a fan and began fanning yourself furiously until you remember the old fan in the attic. You switched it on and slumped on the couch until you realized that the heat has really become unbearable that you got compelled to consider buying a home air conditioning unit as soon as possible or else you might just stay the whole afternoon inside the refrigerator.

There are different types of air conditioning units that vary in features and of course, in prices. The bigger the horsepower of the unit, the higher its cooling capacity is. For example, a unit with a 1.5 horsepower will be sufficient already to keep a 20-square-meter room cool. Of course, the bigger the room, the bigger the horsepower should be to achieve the ideal coolness. Go for units that are less noisy or those that have noise reduction feature. This kind is ideal for those who have babies so as not to disturb their sleep. There are also programmable units where in you can automatically adjust the time settings for an energy-efficient running operation.

The two general types of air conditioners are the window-type unit and the split type. Window types are the choice for small rooms and they are sold at very affordable prices. On the other hand, split air conditioner is a bit expensive but the cost is very justifiable since this particular type serves two functions: cooling and heating a room. Its two-way function enables this unit to be useful all-year round so it’s surely a wise investment for summer and winter breaks.

Another way of making it sure that the heat won’t go to your head and make you act like a grumpy old man/woman and also another way of taking matters in your hands, literally speaking is to get yourself a DIY air conditioning that could be installed in just an hour or less. Install the unit near an outlet since most air conditioners have short plugs and carefully secure the fastening of the brackets so that the unit will not fall off.
 
Below are the step-by-step procedures in installing a sample do-it-yourself air conditioning unit:

1. Gather all the necessary materials and tools that you’ll need.
You will use the following to install the unit: a pencil, a screw driver (better if you have a power drill), a measuring tape, a caulking gun, a waterproof caulk, a spirit level, some foam strips and of course the mounting and installation hardware that comes with your purchase of the unit.

2. Begin mounting the hardware.
By following the instructions that come with the unit, use the hardware to install the fittings at the window. Screw one end of the bracket to the sill and to have condensation drainage and to level the unit, make an adjustment on the screw found at the center of the unit.

3. Place the unit in the window opening.
Secure it in the mounting bracket and make sure that it gets lock in its proper place.

4. Secure the extensions and make sure they all fit in place.
Fasten the extensions to the sash after checking that they are properly placed against the window.

5. Seal the installation inside and outside.
Try to look at the specific area(s) where the sashes tend to overlap at each other. Fill the air gap that you can see by using a foam stripper. From the outside, fill in also every gap that you could see using the caulking gun.

6. Plug it in.
Finally, check the unit and observe how it will operate.
